Mission & Impact

Mission

Decoding Dyslexia Iowa is a grassroots movement driven by Iowa families and professionals concerned with the limited access to educational interventions for dyslexia within our public schools.  We aim to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children, and influence policymakers and educators on best practices to identify, remediate and support Iowa students with dyslexia.

Policy Goals

  1. A universal definition and understanding of “dyslexia” in the state education code.
  2. Teacher training in higher education for new teachers and continuing education for current teachers on dyslexia, its warning signs and appropriate intervention strategies.
  3. Early screening tests for dyslexia.
  4. Mandatory evidence-based dyslexia remediation programs implemented with fidelity, which can be accessed by both general and special education populations in Iowa schools.
  5. Access to appropriate assistive technologies and other accommodations in the school setting for students with dyslexia.

Impact

Decoding Dyslexia Iowa began in 2013 as small group of concerned parents and educators who gathered to discuss the problems children with dyslexia face in our state.  Since then, our grassroots efforts have produced new legislation and policies, awareness events, teacher training, and support groups across the state.  We are proud to provide information, resources and support to parents and educators in Iowa and beyond.
